Examples of Candor That Might Be Punished:
- Dissatisfaction
- Pushing back on physician behavior
- Ethics violations
- Asking why something is happening?
- Singling out a member of a team or link in a process as the key element of a process
- Pointing out how presented data may be incorrect—could hurt others’ feelings
- Asking to pursue problem solving vs. going with a gut solution
- Questioning a direction
- “I'm sorry Mr. CIO, but we worry that delaying the feature you requested incurs less cost than delaying the feature requested by the customer.”
- Discussing what is feasible vs. what is desired
- Highlighting errors in manufacturing vs. office
- Correcting a superior
- Talking to people about their mistakes
- Pointing out another person’s abusive behavior
- Over-eagerness, repetition, or lack of in-depth knowledge can undermine your candor
- Slowing down to understand a problem
- Pointing out during leadership training that the CEO leading the training is a tyrant (could be career-limiting)
- Writing or oral style
- Suggesting a meeting might not be useful
- Asking uncomfortable questions in a large meeting
- Pointing out I have hidden disabilities
